VOF Owned Lands

  • House Mountain, Rockbridge County: 876 acres located on and between Little House and Big House Mountains. This is a favorite area for hikers from local colleges and the surrounding areas and is managed cooperatively with Washington and Lee University, Virginia Military Institute, and the Rockbridge Area Conservation Council, a local conservation group.

  • Blue Ball Mountain, Clarke County: 100 acres located just west of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Blue Ball is a distinct geologic feature jutting into the landscape along the State Scenic Shenandoah River.

  • Kohl’s Island, Northumberland County: 40 acres located at the confluence of the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay. This property is a sandy island and home to the federally endangered tiger beetle.

  • Bull Run Mountains, Fauquier and Prince William Counties: 2,500 acres, the easternmost mountains in the state. The Bull Run Mountains comprise one of the largest, relatively intact and unfragmented natural landscapes east of the Blue Ridge in northern Virginia. VOF leases about 800 acres of the land to the Bull Run Mountains Conservancy, a local non-profit group, which manages it for public access and educational activities. VOF also holds easements on hundreds of acres in the immediate area. On May 1, 2002, The Bull Run Mountain Area was formally dedicated as the 34th State Natural Area Preserve.
